Cake and a Cup of Tea

Posted at 6:48pm | 2 comments

This weekend me, my brother and my sister made a cake for my dads birthday, so it would be a surprise for him when he got home from work. I made the cake, my sister made the butter cream and then all of us decorated it. I’m really pleased with how it turned out, we had a couple of problems such as it sticking to the work surface causing the 2 holes on the top, but overall it was a success. My dad liked the surprise, and by the end of the evening all of the cake had been eaten, it was really nice. I’ve made Victoria sponges a few times now, although this was the first time I had done it away from home, so next time I’m going to make something else, maybe a chocolate cake? I’m not sure, what’s your favourite cake to bake?

I haven’t posted here for a whole, have I? It feels weird to be blogging again, two months is a long time. The past couple of months have been hectic, due to university applications and also schoolwork overload, so I haven’t had time to blog or even anything interesting to write about - because I’m sure none of you want to constantly hear me ramble about how rubbish school is! I’ve got some exams over the next couple of weeks, so after them hopefully things will stop being hectic for a while so that I can start paying proper attention to this site again, because I really have missed it.

I hope that you all had a fantastic Christmas and also a good start to 2009! Hopefully this year is a good one

Je mangerai beaucoup de croissants

Posted at 8:16pm | 13 comments

Wow, I haven’t blogged for two weeks, it feels strange to be blogging again. As you probably have guessed, school has been keeping me very busy recently. I handed in the first section of my ICT coursework yesterday, so that’s a weight off of my mind, but I’ve still got loads of other work to do - I’ve got 2 politics essays that need to be done by Monday! Eek. I’ve been meaning to blog all week, but I haven’t had the time or had anything interesting to write about. A teenager moaning about her homework isn’t the most interesting subject in the world, is it? But don’t worry, I have got something more interesting to say today….

Next Thursday I’m going to France for the day! Which will definitely be a change from my current boring daily routine. I’m going with my History class and we’re going to be visiting where the Battle of the Somme took place. The Battle of the Somme was one of the biggest battles in the First World War, which was fought from July to November 1916 and had over 1.5 million casualties. The History Geek side of me is going to love this trip, I’ve always wanted to visit a location of a battle from the First World War.

The trip was a bargain too, it’s only costing me £30 to go. The reason why it isn’t too expensive is because someone in my class won funding for any department in the school that they wanted, and they chose to give it to our History class for a trip, so we’ve had a lot of it paid for. It probably would have cost at least £60 each if we hadn’t of got the extra funding.

I plan on taking lots of photos while I’m there, so be prepared for a long blog entry next Friday with me writing all about the trip and posting lots of the photos. As you can tell, I’m really excited, I haven’t done something this fun in ages Also, I can practice my rubbish French, which is always fun.

Title translation: ‘I’m going to eat lots of croissants’. I apologise if it’s wrong, please correct me if it is, my French skills are almost non-existent

Your Questions Answered

Posted at 7:27pm | 9 comments

School has been taking over my life recently. 99% of my life is school/homework, and the other 1% is sleeping and making cakes (which have been really yummy, I might post some photos in my next blog). I’ve been really struggling with the workload, they’re just giving us too much. I’m not behind in any of my subjects yet, and I’ve been handing in all of my homework on time, but I’m worried that soon I might slip and start to fall behind. Hopefully I won’t, but I’m still worried about it. Is it usual to feel like this at the beginning of an academic year? I’m sure I probably felt the same at this time last year, but I can’t remember.

Now, I’m going to stop thinking about school, and answer the questions from my previous post! I’ve been looking forward to answering them all week, so thank you for submitting them

Your site is called sonerdy and you call yourself a geek. What’s so geeky and nerdy about you? (Asked by Angelica)
I’ve always been known as the ‘nerdy’ or ‘geeky’ one, not due to being clever but because of my nerdy/geeky interests. The other day at school I randomly started debating with a younger year in the corridor. Why? Because they were talking about The Matrix and were getting all of the facts wrong, so I felt the need to correct them. I think I scared them a bit! To be honest, it’s a bit hard to explain why I see myself as ‘nerdy’ or ‘geeky’, because I think I’m normal - it’s everyone else who are strange

What are your dream holiday destinations? (Asked by Lauren)
There are so many places that I would like to visit, I’ve never been properly abroad before (apart from two day trips to France) so I’ve got a really long list. My current dream holiday destination would have to be Luxembourg. I’ve been reading about that country a lot recently, and it sounds like a really interesting place, so it would be nice to visit and see what it’s actually like. I’m also not really a fan of the sun, so it has the perfect climate for me! One day I also hope to visit Germany, especially Berlin.

If you could pick only one electronic device besides your computer that you could keep, what would it be? (Asked by Caitlin)
Definitely my TV. I’m always watching rubbish chat shows and DVDs when I’m bored, and I also usually have it on in the background when I’m on my laptop so it would be really quiet without it. I think I could survive without any other electronics, even my phone because I rarely use it, but I couldn’t imagine life without my TV.

What’s your favorite pair of shoes? (Asked by Sandra)
Last year bought a bargain pair of trainers from TKMaxx, they’re a pair of black Etnies and they’re really comfortable, I very rarely wear any of my other shoes.

Approximately, how many t-shirts do you own? (Asked by Belinda)
I own 5 t-shirts, which I know isn’t many. My excuse is that I don’t wear my own clothes much due to having to wear a uniform to school, but when I go to university next year I plan on filling half of my wardrobe with awesome t-shirts! It’ll be nice being able to wear my own clothes all the time. I do own some other shirts but they’re all either too big or are really old looking, so I only wear when I’m being lazy and staying at home all day.

What is your most favorite piece of clothing you own? And why! (Asked by Christine)
My favourite piece of clothing is my traffic jam on toast shirt. It’s a really comfy shirt, and it fits me perfectly - which is nice, because it’s so hard trying to find clothes that look nice, aren’t too expensive and fit properly!

What’s your favourite thing about where you live? And if you had to live somewhere else, where would it be? (Asked by Carmen)
My favourite thing about living in London is the public transport. You probably expected a cooler answer than that, but I couldn’t survive without it. Transport For London does a fantastic job, and we have the best public transport service in the country - I couldn’t imagine living in other places where they only have 2 buses a day! I rely on buses and trains to get me everywhere, so it’s a big part of life.
If I had to live somewhere else, I would have to choose America. The fact that they predominately speak English would be perfect for me, because I’m rubbish at speaking other languages and it would feel weird being in a country where I didn’t understand what everyone else were saying. I also really want to try Lucky Charms cereal, which they do sell here in the UK but at a highly inflated price (£10, approx $20) because it’s imported and is only sold in a few shops (I’ve never seen it before, but I’ve been told that it’s sold in some shops). America looks like it has some fantastic sugar filled cereals, and I love cereal…

Ahoy, me Hearties!

Posted at 12:28pm | 16 comments

Today is Talk Like A Pirate day, I hope you all participated! Ashamedly, I completely forgot about it, which is unlike me. For the past 3 years (since I discovered Talk Like A Pirate day) I’ve always done something for it. Last year me and my friend walked around with toy parrots on our shoulders and used pirate phrases throughout the day, it was fun! There are still 11 hours of today left though, so I’m going to make sure that I do something to celebrate it - I’ll probably talk to my dad later like a pirate and confuse him, that’ll be fun

I apologise for my unexpected absence from this blog, school work has been taking over my life. Every day this week I’ve planned to write a blog, but each time I’ve had to do homework so I didn’t have time to write one. I’m proud of myself though, I’ve been keeping on top of all of my work and I haven’t been leaving anything to the last minute, something that I hope to continue throughout this academic year.

12th September was the annual ‘Ask Me A Question’ blog day (started by Amanda), it looked fun so I thought that I would give it a go! (I’m going to pretend that I think today is the 12th, not the 19th, of September..). So here is an opportunity for you to ask me anything. Of course there are some limitations to what I’ll answer, but I’ll answer almost anything - I know that we all love being nosey, and here’s your perfect chance! I promise that I’ll give an honest answer, and also that you’ll get a plug/link with the answers when I post them. I’ll answer the questions in my next entry. I’m looking forward to your questions

I Have An Addiction

Posted at 7:31pm | 17 comments

An addiction to buying cheap books, that is. Last week I went to my local charity book to give them some of my brothers old toys, and I walked out with two more books to add to my growing collection. I’ve never really been into buying books, whenever I’ve needed a book in the past I have just gone to the library, but recently I’ve been noticing these bargains in the local charity shop and I haven’t been able to resist! The books won’t gather dust though, they’ll be really useful for the History project I’m doing this year. These books are, as you probably guessed it, WWII related again. Here are photos of the two new books I bought, I took photos of them next to a DVD case to show how huge they are:

RRP: £29.99 ($53.03 USD)
What I bought it for: £4.50 ($7.95 USD)

RRP: £25 ($44.20 USD)
What I bought it for: £3.75 ($6.63 USD)

Both of these books will get alot of use this year, especially the D-Day one because that’s the topic I’m doing my History project on, the other one will be useful for background information and general geekery though

On Wednesday I went back to school, and surprisingly I haven’t been too tired. I thought that after a 6 week summer holiday of having lie ins that I would find it impossible to wake up at 5:50am, but fortunately it hasn’t been too hard. Getting used to going to bed before midnight is annoying though, so I’ve been having a nap after school each day, something which I’ll have to stop soon because I’m going to have to start doing homework in the evening so I can’t waste my time sleeping. I haven’t got much else to say about school because not much has happened, but I’m sure when my teachers decide to pile the homework on me that I’ll have alot of moaning to do.

I’m making a cake tomorrow (Sunday), I can’t wait!

Grenade! Grenade!

Posted at 7:45pm | 17 comments

Yes that is me wearing a Clone Trooper (Star Wars reference, if you’re confused) mask, and yes I’m a geek, but isn’t it fantastic?! Also, you’re probably wondering why I’m wearing a hood in the photo. I’m not being a ‘gangster’ Clone Trooper (although me and my brother did have a laugh about that for ages!), the mask only covers my face so my hair is still visible which looks weird, I doubt there are any Clone Troopers with hair coming out of their helmets - unless one of them decided to glue a wig on it that is!

Anyway, now for some less geektastic news, I think I have decided what phone to get (previous entry explains my ‘mobile phone quest’). It’s a Samsung J700, and only costs £49.99 (approx $95USD), it’s reduced from £70 (approx $131USD) which is awesome! I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to afford the £70 anyway, so it’s nice to be able to find such a good phone at a lower price. I’m probably going to go to the shop next week to buy it

Mobile Phone Confusion

Posted at 4:23pm | 18 comments

Recently, my mobile phones (a Nokia 3310) battery life has been getting ridiculous, it only lasts a day and doesn’t even last that long if I dare to use it, so I’ve decided that I need to get a new phone. However, there is one problem, I know next to nothing about mobile phones. I can ramble on about silly things like printers and computers for ages, but when it comes to mobiles I am completely clueless. So, this is when I turn to you! I would be grateful for any suggestions, it would help me a lot

I’ve saved up £70 (approx $140USD), so that’s how much I’m looking to spend, I might consider spending a bit more if I fall in love with a phone though. These are the things I’m looking for in a mobile phone (some of which I think are standard in phones nowadays?):
- A colour screen
- A camera
- MP3 Ringtones (Something I’ve been dreaming about for years, I’ve had enough of monophonic lol)
- I don’t want a flip phone, I’ll be scared that I might break it. Slide phones look cool though.
- A couple of games. Snake on my Nokia is addictive when bored on buses, so I would like to have something to replace that.

I was going to say something else in this blog entry, but I’ve decided not to and just dedicate this post to my mobile phone quest. I’ll update in my next blog entry whether or not I’ve finally chosen which phone to buy

Burger King = Yuck

Posted at 7:42pm | 19 comments

Today I went shopping with my sister, didn’t get much but I did pick up a couple of things. One of the things I bought was a shirt (photo above, taken in the bathroom on my tippy toes, I apologise for the messy hair ) that I’m really pleased with, it’s an official Nintendo shirt and says on it: ‘Professional Nintendo Game Tester. Can’t you see I’m working here?’
I found the shirt in the boys children section of Tesco, and it’s for ages 13-14! I couldn’t believe that it actually fitted me, it’s quite a loose fit. On the label it says that it has a 35 inch chest, but that must be wrong because if it was it would of been tight on me as I’m exactly 35 inches. This shirt is an official Nintendo shirt and was only £6 (approx $12USD), so it was a great bargain, kids clothes are exempt from VAT I think (which is 17.5% here in the UK) so that’s what probably made it such a good price. My sister also got an official Nintendo shirt for the same price, on her one it says ‘Just one more level…’ written several times like when people write lines on a blackboard. I think in the future when I’m looking for cool shirts, I’m going to look in Tescos first, I’m surprised that I found such a cool shirt in there. My sister also got a nice pair of jeans in there, I almost got a pair too but they didn’t fit me right grrr.

Ok, the title, what does it mean? Today while shopping with my sister, for the first time in years I ate in Burger King. Usually my sister eats in there and I get a sandwich from Sainsburys and sit in there with her, but today I was really hungry and didn’t feel like walking all the way to Sainsburys, so I got something in there instead. I rarely eat fast food, I don’t see the point when I could easily eat something healthier (i.e. a salad from the supermarket) for half the price. I got a Whopper burger meal, and it just tasted like….nothing. The best bit of the burger was the gherkins, but I love gherkins. It all just tasted a bit blah and the burger itself tasted metally, my sister enjoyed her chicken strips though. I’m not a snob when it comes to food, I’m far from it actually as most of the food that my family eats is crap (own brand stuff and boring food because my brother and sister are fussy), but that burger was rubbish. Burger King burgers also make me burp, which is a bit embarrassing when in changing rooms trying on clothes heh. Next time, even if I’m really hungry, I’m going to take that trip down the road to Sainsburys and get a nice Tuna and Sweetcorn sandwich instead. Although I must admit, something which is quite hyprocritical, I used to love Big Macs - haven’t had one in ages though, might treat myself to one soon though?

The first week of summer is just ending, 5 weeks left.

Schools Out For SUMMER!

Posted at 9:19pm | 15 comments

Firstly I want to say, Happy Birthday to Lindsay from omigod.net! Make sure that you all go and say Happy Birthday to her, she’s awesome

Last Friday I was looking through the book section of the charity shop near my school, and I found the most amazing book. It was called ‘The World at Arms’ and was a book about WWII, I fell in love with it when I saw it - a massive book full of EVERYTHING to do with WWII, it was perfect for me. I wasn’t able to buy the book though, because my bag was full of text books so I couldn’t fit it in there and the book was really heavy so if I carried it around all day it would probably break my back, so unfortunately I had to leave it in the shop. When I got home I told my mum about the book, and just carried on my day as normal never expecting to see the book again. Then on Saturday morning when I was at my dads flat my mum texted to me to tell me that she had gone to the charity shop and bought the book for me! I was so happy The best thing is that on the Friday the book was £3 ($6) and then on the Saturday it was only £1.50, so by waiting that extra day I saved some money. I can’t believe how cheap the book was though, the RRP for it must be at least £20.
I’m sure this book will keep my interest in WWII busy for at least a couple of months, here’s a few photos of the book (please ignore my horrible bed!) :

(Click here to see the other photos)

Today was my last day of term at school, and now I’ve got 6 weeks off! I don’t go back until the beginning of September. I’ve decided to make a list of all of the things I want to do, and then every week in my blog posts check off the ones that I’ve done. Hopefully this will motivate me not to be lazy, and also do some of the work I need to do. I’ll add to the list in the next couple of days, because I’ve probably forgotten some of the things that I wanted to add. If you’ve got any recommendations for what I could add to the list, mention it in the comments

So, here is my Summer To Do List (in no particular order):

  1. Bake a cake
  2. Start ICT coursework
  3. Go to the cinema at least twice
  4. Collect my AS Level results on August 14th
  5. Go to France for the day with my dad and sister
  6. Go to the library
  7. Sell some things on eBay
  8. Go to the Imperial War Museum with my younger brother
  9. Do some research for my history assignment (D-Day)
  10. Tidy my bedroom
  11. Go to the park with my brother and sister
